Derham, Begründer der Physikothologie, war Mitglied der britischen Royal Society, und mischte Naturwissenschaft und religiöse Spekulation. Er bezieht sich in seinem Werk stark auf Christaan Huygens, weist aber die Phantasien über Bewohner der Planeten innerhalb und außerhalb des Sonnensystems als nutzlose Phantasiebetätigung ab.
