Christiaan Huygens war der erste Astronom, der eine Oberflächenstruktur auf einem Planeten beobachtet hat: Syrtis Major auf Mars.
In seinem Systema Saturnium (1659) hat er geschrieben und illustriert:
“Auch auf dem Mars habe ich eine Zone beobachtet, sehr breit, die den mittleren Teil der Scheibe verdunkelte, so wie die gezeigte Abbildung sehen lässt.“
